Bronco women's 2008 schedule announced Women’s soccer head coach Mike Haines announced the 18-match schedule for the upcoming 2008 season. The Broncos open up the season with a home match against Wyoming on Aug. 22, at 11 a.m. The match is the only out-of-conference home contest for the Broncos this season, but will have two exhibition home matches with IUPUI on Aug. 14 and Davenport on Aug. 17. From there the Brown & Gold begin a six-game road trip traveling to face Wisconsin, Wisconson-Milwaukee, Michigan, Michigan State, Arkansas and Missouri State. MSYSA is now accepting applications for the 2009 Girls State Cup The MSYSA State Cup is the first level of competition in the US Youth Soccer National Championship Series. Teams who win the State Cup will earn the right to represent Michigan at regional and potentially national competitions in the summer of 2009. In the State Cup, each team will play three self-scheduled games. by being the first team ever from West Michigan to qualify for the National Championship Tournament in soccer.

of 19-3 on the way beating the State Cup Champions from South Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska and Kansas. | The Michigan Bucks recovered from an early miscue at Kalamazoo to score three second half goals in beating the Outrage 3-1 Saturday at Mayor's Riverfront Park. Bucks suffer first loss of 2008 PDL campaign The Michigan Bucks lost their first match of the 2008 Premier Development League campaign Thursday night, falling 1-0 to the Toronto Lynx. With the loss, the Bucks fall to 8-1-0, but maintain 1st place in the PDL’s Great Lakes Division. Kalamazoo keeper campers sought (Jun 19) Director Nick Carlin-Voigt (George Mason University Men's and Women's Assistant Coach, DC United Youth Staff Coach) still has a very limited number of spots left for his 2008 Summer GK Camp. The residential and commuter camp will be held on the scenic campus of Kalamazoo College. The Camp will run from Monday June 23 to Friday June 27. The camp (day and residential camp options) specializes in elite goalkeeper training for boys and girls ages 10-19 and is an excellent way to gain recruiting exposure to elite coaches. Area refs rate Michigan Lutheran most sporting (Jun 17) Michigan Lutheran High School is the recipient of the 2008 girls' soccer sportsmanship award presented by the Southwest Michigan Soccer Referees' Association. Lutheran coach Jeff Lillo was voted as most sporting coach and Michigan Lutheran was also voted as having the most sporting players. Fennville was rated as having the best fans. Each year area high school soccer referees rate the schools in Southwest Michigan which sponsor soccer. Michigan Lutheran also won the award last year in their first season of varsity soccer.

Grand Rapids Crew Juniors U14 Boys win State Cup Grand Rapids Crew Juniors (GRCJ) have announced the success of the club's U14 boys Midwest Regional League (MRL) Team. The team has gone through the National Premier league with one of the best records in the country for this age group – competing against top teams throughout the Midwest. Last weekend they firmed up their dominance in Michigan by winning the State Cup. The road to the final came via 4-0 and 5-0 victories with the final being won 4-0. Fire again roll to rout of Revolution (May 3) The Chicago Fire continued their 2008 dominance over the New England Revolution with a resounding 3-0 victory on Saturday night at Gillette Stadium. Chris Rolfe set the visitors on their way in the 29th minute from a John Thorrington through ball. These signings are highlighted by former English Premiership player Mark Briggs. English Midfielder Briggs will be joined by Australian defender Yahaya Musa, Antiguan International striker Troy Mellanson and defender Mahamadou Simpara who hails from the African nation of Mali. Two Thorrington goals fuel Fire (Apr 26) Two second-half goals by midfielder John Thorrington gave the Chicago Fire a 2-1 victory against the Colorado Rapids on Saturday night at Toyota Park. Thorrington scored in the 53rd and 84th minutes, giving the Fire their third victory in the last four games. Kalamazoo Outrage sign five more players The Kalamazoo Outrage team is pleased to announce the signing, pending USL/PDL approval, of five players for their upcoming debut season in the United Soccer Leagues, Premier Development League. Muskegon to again host MSYSA recreational tournament The MSYSA Kohl's American Cup will be held June 7-8, 2008. The deadline to apply is May 5, 2008. The tournament is the largest recreational youth soccer tournament in the United States, and it is returning to Muskegon for a second straight year. The event is strictly for Michigan’s recreational players, and it emphasizes fun and learning in a family and festival-like atmosphere. In addition to fun soccer games where scores and standings are not kept, players can expect a repeat appearance by the MSYSA Prize Wheel, several inflatable games, and a Skills & Drills Competition area. Furthermore, all players will receive a goody bag and tournament participation medal. The 2008 MSYSA Kohl's American Cup is open to U9-U14 boys and girls recreational teams (AYSO and other non-MSYSA recreational teams are invited). The cost is only $100 MSYSA teams and $125 non MSYSA teams.
View Tournament Application Kickers Club seeking Summerfest Tournament entrants (Apr 18) The St. Joe Kickers Club is looking for veteran men's teams (30 and over) to participate in their annual Summerfest Soccer Tournament to be held at their club's fields on Sat., Aug. 2, 2008. Blossomland Soccer League begins fifth season The Blossomland Soccer League starts its fifth season of adult premier play in Southwest Michigan with four games scheduled for Apr. 27. The league has increased to 17 clubs and features two divisions for the first time. Three hundred twenty players from 27 countries have signed up for the 2008 campaign --- almost 100 more participants than last year. RSL went up a goal in the 71st minute off a Chicago defender misclearance that resulted in an own-goal, but the Fire came back with a late 20-yard strike from midfielder Cuauhtémoc Blanco in the game’s final moments to gain an important point on the road. The Crew and Toronto FC to battle for Trillium Cup The Columbus Crew and Toronto FC announced that the competition between the geographic rivals will be known as the Trillium Cup, which refers to the official flower of the province of Ontario and official wildflower of the State of Ohio. Selected through on-line balloting, the Trillium Cup will be awarded annually to the winner of the regular-season series between the two clubs. In addition, the mayors of the two cities, Michael B. Coleman of Columbus and David Miller of Toronto, have agreed to a friendly wager on the first game of this season’s inaugural Trillium Cup, Saturday’s season opener between the clubs at Crew Stadium.
Valpo men's soccer signs Brazilian Valparaiso men’s soccer head coach Mike Avery announced today that Jose Renato Pecego, a native of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has signed a National Letter of Intent and will suit up for the Crusaders beginning in 2008. Pecego is the tenth member of Valpo’s incoming 2008 class, which is now comprised of seven freshmen and three juniors. After a scoreless first half, Rapids defender Stephen Keel tallied the lone goal of the match in the 86th minute. Columbus Crew end pre-season on winning note The Columbus Crew closed out its 2008 pre-season schedule Saturday with a 1-0 victory over Metapán at Crew Stadium. The pair recently returned from their club’s English affiliate Sheffield Wednesday where they spent time with players and staff of the Owls at Sheffield’s Middlewood Road training ground. The trip was designed to solidify the foundation of the blossoming relationship between the two clubs. MLS Picks Game returns to mysoccer.com Player registration is now open for the 2008 version of the MLS Picks Game. Last year, mysoccer.com set aside a $200 purse for prizes. Based on player feedback, the prize money was donated to charity. In keeping with that theme for 2008, mysoccer.com will donate to charity, $10 for every player who can accumulate at least 100 points over the course of the 2008 Major League Soccer season. Columbus Crew down Blackburn reserves side The Columbus Crew defeated the Blackburn Rovers Reserves, 1-0, today at Rovers’ training facility in Blackburn, England. Adam Moffat scored the lone goal for the Crew, when his left-footed strike from 25 yards out beat the Blackburn goalkeeper in the 23rd minute. Fire add Colorado defender in waiver draft The Chicago Fire have acquired former Colorado Rapids defender Brandon Prideaux with the 12th selection in today’s MLS Waiver Draft. The club also placed the following players on waivers – Tim Conway, Jeff Curtin, Floyd Franks, Jordan Russolillo, and Osei Telesford. The Fire also announced single-game tickets for 2008 home games at TOYOTA PARK, will go on sale Thursday, March 6 at 10 a.m. CT. MIchigan Bucks re-sign leading scorer Uziogwe

These Kingdom players were selected to represent Michigan at the US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program (ODP) Regional Training Camp in July in Rockford, Ill. The players began the selection process at tryouts for the ODP program in August 2007 and were chosen for the ODP winter training pool, which met for two weekends of intense training in Pontiac, Mich. From that pool, the boys were selected for the Michigan team in their respective age groups. At the regional camp, the players will compete against the best players in the region that includes 13 Midwest states. The regional camps serve as a player showcase for National ODP Training Camp selection.

Valpo announces summer girls soccer camps The Valparaiso University women’s soccer team is holding a camp this summer at the Eastgate Soccer Fields June 24-26 for all age groups. A High School Camp “Valpo Identification Program” is for girls ages 14-18 years of age. The camp is designed to train individuals in technical and tactical aspects of their game. Training sessions will be held in the morning along with the evening. Afternoon seminars will include coach guided self-training and recruiting lectures. The Crusaders Youth Skills Camp is held for girls ages 7-13. The camp will run from 5:30-8 p.m. and is designed to refine each player’s technical skills while providing a solid foundation for learning the skills necessary to continue to grow and enjoy the game. The Little Crusaders Camp, will also be held from June 24-26 from 6-7 p.m. Designed for boys and girls 4-6 years of age, the camp will serve as a fun introduction to the game of soccer for young players. Fire sign Polish international Frankowski The Chicago Fire have signed Polish international forward Tomasz Frankowski to the team’s 28-man roster, pending P-1 work visa clearance. Frankowski, 33, joins Chicago after accepting an invitation in early February to convene with the team for preseason training. Per league policy, terms of his contract were not disclosed. CMU announces girls high school clinic Central Michigan University’s women’s soccer program will be hosting a Girls High School Preseason Soccer Clinic on the weekend of March 8th - 9th, to help players get a head start on their spring season of competition. Chicago - Toronto scrimmage ends in draw The Chicago Fire tied Toronto FC 1-1 today in a preseason scrimmage at the IMG Academies, in Bradenton, Fla. In a previous post, I talked about the loss of Major League Soccer talent caused by the league's expansion and the many players who have left the MLS nest and taken flight to Europe. The question now becomes, which teams are best equipped to get the most from the remaining talent pool? Perhaps a good indicator would measure success on the field (i.e. points earned in the regular season) in comparison to the amount of money being spent on players. The thought here is that the teams that can earn points while keeping salaries low, are pretty good at developing young and inexpensive talent. Fire and Wizards draw 1-1 in preseason play The Chicago Fire tied the Kansas City Wizards 1-1 Saturday in a preseason scrimmage at the IMG Academies, in Bradenton, Fla. The Wizards opened scoring with a goal from forward Ryan Pore in the 23rd minute, but the Fire attack leveled the score in the 90th minute off a goal courtesy of rookie midfielder Stephen King. Andy Herron returns to Chicago The Chicago Fire have signed forward Andy Herron to the team’s 28-man roster. Herron, 29, comes to Chicago after the club received the domestic rights to the striker from Columbus Crew on Jan. 21, 2008 in exchange for the Fire’s 2010 MLS SuperDraft fourth round pick. West Michigan Fire Women name new head coach The West Michigan Firewomen announced that Neathan Gibson has been selected as the head coach for the upcoming 2008 W-League season. Gibson, who has a wide array of coaching and playing experience at the international level, also brings a wealth of knowledge within the USL having time with the Rochester Raging Rhinos, Des Moines Menace and West Michigan Edge. GR Crew Juniors appoint new Technical Director The Grand Rapids Crew Juniors (GRCJ) have appointed George Moni as Technical Director. Coach Moni will serve as Technical Director for all boys teams within the GRCJ and provide extensive expertise to the clubs curriculum development. Jeff Brown will be Technical Director for the ladies and continue his job in standardizing club training methods. Referee course openings still available (Feb 8) There are still a few openings for the United States Soccer Federation's entry level referee course to be held at the St. Joseph Public Library on Mon., Feb. 25 from 5:00-8:30pm and Sat., Mar. 1 from 1:00-5:30pm. Participants must attend both sessions. This course is necessary for certification to officiate travel league soccer games. The Crew release 2008 schedule The Columbus Crew announced its schedule for the 2008 Major League Soccer season, which it opens at home on March 29 vs. Toronto FC and features a home date against the Los Angeles Galaxy on Oct. 4. Fire announce 2008 schedule The Chicago Fire, in conjunction with Major League Soccer, have unveiled their 2008 regular season schedule and national television broadcast information. The Fire are slated to appear in a total of 21 national television broadcasts throughout their 11th season of MLS play. For a second consecutive year, every Fire game will be televised, either through national or regional broadcasts, or on MLSnet.com. Kalamazoo Outrage announce first player signings The Kalamazoo Outrage took one step closer to their first ever competitive match on Tuesday with the announcement of the clubs first signings for the upcoming PDL season. The players announced as the clubs first ever signings are Eric Pogue, Alex Andrews, Lance Muckey and Kalamazoo native TJ Howard. Familiar names sign up to sponsor Women’s Professional Soccer Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) announced that two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash and former Yahoo! President and Chief Operating Officer Jeff Mallett will become investors and part owners of the league, which begins play in 2009 with teams based in Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New Jersey/New York, St. Louis, and Washington, D.C. While Nash and Mallett will not operate a team, their investment will fund the ongoing development of WPS and is specifically earmarked for new media ventures and initiatives. Gutierrez signs up for one more MLS season (Feb 5) The Chicago Fire announced that midfielder Diego Gutierrez has re-signed with the club for the 2008 season. Gutierrez, 35, announced that he will be retiring following this season. Gutierrez, a Major League Soccer original, began his career with the Kansas City Wizards in 1996 before joining the Fire in their inaugural 1998 season. Gutierrez returned to the Fire in Jan. 2006 after a four-year hiatus with the Kansas City Wizards.

The 2008 VIP, held on the campus of Valparaiso University, is a soccer camp for high school age players with serious aspirations to play college soccer. Session I will be held from June 16-18, with Session II scheduled from July 21-23. Kalamazoo Outrage schedule released by the USL The United Soccer Leagues has released the W League and the Premier Development League schedules for the 2008 season. He will be the fourth coach in the Fire’s 11-year history. View Flyer (pdf format) BSL sets mandatory organizational meeting (Jan 6) The Blossomland Soccer League will prepare for its fifth season of play with a mandatory meeting for team managers at the Lincoln Township Library in Stevensville, Mich. on Thursday, January 10 at 6:30 pm. All twelve of 2007's teams will return and ten more teams will likely enter the league for 2008. A team representative from each returning and proposed team must attend this meeting. The Blossomland Soccer League is Western Michigan's premier amateur soccer league and is open to all competitive players from high school-age through adult. It is the only United States Soccer Federation-sanctioned league in the Michiana area. Play will begin in late April and culminate with the league championship in late July.
Fire players invited to US national team camp U.S. Soccer announced that U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Bob Bradley has named 26 players to the training camp roster that will begin workouts this Thursday, Jan. 3 at U.S. Soccer's National Training Center at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. Included on the roster are Chicago Fire midfielder Justin Mapp (8 caps), goalkeeper Matt Pickens (0 caps), and forward Chris Rolfe (6 caps) for the team's first training of 2008. The group will prepare for the USA’s first match of the year, a friendly against Sweden on Jan. 19 at The Home Depot Center (7:30 p.m. CT, Fox Soccer Channel).

Among the details finalized recently at the 2007 Annual General Meeting at the Hyatt Regency in Tampa, FL were the alignment, schedule and playoff details for the 2008 competition. Area beginner referee course announced (Dec 6) A USSF beginners' referee course will be held at the St. Joseph, MI Public Library on Feb. 25 and Mar. 1, 2008 for ages 12 and up. The class will allow participants to officiate recreational, travel league, and middle school soccer. The cost is $50. This time coach Steve Smith's Dutchmen came out on the short end bowing to Wheaton 1-0 on Friday in the Bergsma Memorial Invitational. The Kalamazoo Outrage name was one of two finalist that were selected from over 100 entries to the “Name the PDL and W-League Contest” that was held last spring. 2007 BIG EAST preseason picks announced The University of Connecticut and St. John’s University have been chosen to capture the 2007 BIG EAST men’s soccer regular season divisional titles. For the third straight year, the Huskies were picked to claim the Blue Division title, while defending BIG EAST Champion St. John’s was voted to finish atop the Red Division. The votes were cast by the league’s 16 head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own teams. Valpo names Rick King assistant coach Valparaiso men’s soccer coach Mike Avery announced today that Rick King has been hired as an assistant coach for the Crusader program. King comes to Valpo after spending the 2006 season as a volunteer assistant at Notre Dame, where he helped guide the Fighting Irish to the Elite 8 of the NCAA College Cup.
